Abstract

Biotechnology is a field of engineering, science and technology that combines the application of bioprocesses to biological organisms and systems by various industries. Fungi, a biotechnologically useful and valuable organism group, is used in many industrial production, such as the synthesis of pharmaceutical products with cost-effective fermentation processes. Medicinal mushrooms are known to have bioactivities such as anticancer, antioxidant, antimicrobial, hepatoprotective, antineurodegenerative, antidiabetic, antiangiogenic and hypoglycemic effects. Advances in molecular biology techniques have provided new ways to use yeasts and molds as microbial cell factories for the production of various secondary metabolites. The products obtained from mushrooms are increasingly used in medical, biotechnological and environmental applications. Fungi that provide the world with penicillin, lovastatin and other globally important drugs continue to be an unused resource with enormous industrial potential. In this study, an overview of antimicrobial and antioxidant activities has been made by giving examples of the use of mushrooms in biotechnology.
